Restricted zones and narrow alleyways: what to know before driving in Genoa
Genoa's historic centre has an extensive restricted traffic zone and the caruggi are often too narrow even for a small car. If your goal is to see Piazza De Ferrari, skip the car: the centre is comfortably walkable or reachable by public transport. If your goal is exploring Portofino, Camogli or the Cinque Terre independently, renting makes sense — pick up the car at a car park outside the centre and don't attempt to drive it into the caruggi.
When it makes sense
For Riviera villages less well served by train and to reach the hills of the hinterland — the Ligurian coast is best explored by car, with your own schedule and free scenic stops.
When it doesn't
For staying in Genoa: the historic centre is compact, with narrow alleyways and a strictly enforced restricted zone. A car here is only a parking problem.
